Postcards are great way to get your message out.  Postcard size mail is cheaper to produce than letters in envelopes.  Postcard size mail also mails a lower postage than letters.  And with postcards your message is not hidden inside an envelope.  Your postcard message can be seen as soon as it is taken from the mailbox.
 
Mail is classified by the USPS according to its dimensions. The Postcard size standard is one of several mailing sizes that include USPS postcard size, letter size, and flat size.  Postcards can be mailed with First Class, First Class Presorted, and Standard postage.

Postcard size is defined as between 3 1/2 inches and 4 1/4 inches in height (measured vertically, perpendicular to address), must be between 5 and 6 inches in width (measured horizontally, parallel to address).

The thickness of paper used in making a postcard size mail is also important. Postcard size mail must be made from paper that is between 0.007 inches and 0.016 inches in thickness.

TIP: Postcard size mail can be easily cut from standard 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper. Each sheet will produce 4 postcards 5 1/2 inches wide and 4 1/4 inches tall.

Note: Although 5 1/2 by 4 1/4 has an actual aspect ratio of 1.29, post offices usually accept this as compliant with postcard size.

Postcard size mail requires less postage.  A standard one ounce letter requires .42 postage.  Postcard size mail requires only .27, a 36% savings.

 

Postcard size regulations include Aspect Ratio. Postcard size mail must have an Aspect Ratio between 1.3 and 2.5.  To find aspect ratio, divide width by height.

 

Aspect Ratio = W / H

 

Example: A postcard measuring 5 1/2 inches wide and 4 1/4 inches high has an aspect ratio = 5.5/4.25 = 1.3

 

Example: A postcard measuring 5 inches wide and 4 1/4 high has an aspect ratio = 5/4.25 = 1.2
